General Questions

Learn how to adapt to the forward set thumb on your new Sam Villa Shears. Watch the video below to get started.
Step 1: Register Your Shear
Please take a moment to register your shears by clicking the link below. Registering your shears will allow for expedited warranty service and will safeguard your investment.
https://www.samvilla.com/register-your-tools
Step 2: Your Shear Warranty
Your Sam Villa® shear comes with a lifetime warranty that covers you from defects in material or workmanship, excluding damage and normal wear. This lifetime warranty is only valid if your Sam Villa® shears are serviced by our sharpening service partner, Precision Edge. The lifetime warranty does not include shear sharpening and/or servicing fees. Please contact our shear service partner Precision Edge at: 800-729-3343
We will replace any parts including washers, pivot screws, knobs and finger rings for the life of the shear, should they fail under normal use. Parts will automatically be replaced at the time of service, if needed. It is not necessary to send shears for replacement parts only. For shear replacement parts, please contact our shear service partner Precision Edge at: 800-729-3343
Step 3: Adjusting Tension & Cleaning Your Shears
We encourage you to check and adjust the tension of your shear before using it for the first time. We do set the tension prior to packaging, but occasionally tension may loosen or tighten, so it’s best to check.
The proper way to adjust tension is to start by oiling them and then wiping off the blades so they are clean and dry. Watch the video below to learn the best way to clean and oil your shears.
To adjust your tension, hold your shears vertically with the tip pointing up then lift the thumb handle of the shear while holding the finger side with your other hand and let go of the thumb. The blade should stay open at about a 45-degree angle. If it tries to close, then turn the tension knob or screw to the right (clockwise) one or two clicks to tighten the tension. Repeat the same steps listed above and continue tightening or loosening the tension until the blades stay open around 45 degrees.
Once you have adjusted your shears, try point cutting on your next client and see if you can tell a difference.
For a visual reference please watch the video below of Sam Villa® Education Director Andrew Carruthers demonstrating how to clean, oil and adjust the tension on your shear.
If you believe you are experiencing tension adjustment issues, please contact our shear servicing partner Precision Edge at 800-729-3343
If you have some doubts after watching the video, check out this blog post about “Shear Maintenance – How to Oil And Care For Your Shears”.
Step 4: Learn How to Hold Your Shears to Eliminate Hand, Wrist & Shoulder Pain
One of the biggest complaints from hairdressers is that their wrist, elbow and shoulder hurt at the end of the day. This is largely because of how the shears are held and used throughout the day
If you purchased a shear with our ergonomic forward set thumb handle, watch the video below to learn a few scissor control tips to prevent pain and to get your body into a natural and comfortable cutting position.
If you purchased swivel shears, watch the video below for scissor control & ergonomic cutting tips.
If you purchased a blending shear, watch the video below for scissor control & ergonomic cutting tips.
Step 5: Follow Sam Villa Hair Tutorials on YouTube
We created a playlist of cutting techniques to inspire and motivate you as you begin to use your new Sam Villa Shears. If you aren’t already, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel as we release new cutting and styling tutorials every week. Turn on your alerts to get notified anytime we release a new video.
Step 6: Review Your Shears
In the coming days you will receive an email asking for you to leave a review. We would appreciate your willingness to leave a review to help others like you make an informed decision before making a purchase for new Sam Villa® shears.
Our shears feature unique convex blades which provide the smoothest possible cut and last much longer than beveled shears. However, convex blades are much more difficult to make and to re-sharpen and there are many poorly trained sharpening services that may damage these blades/alter the performance of your Sam Villa® shear. Using the Sam Villa® recommended service center, Precision Edge, is the only way to protect your shear and to keep your lifetime shear warranty (as having another sharpening service sharpen your shears will void your warranty).
If you live in and purchased your shears in the UNITED STATES:
You will need to call Precision Edge prior to shipping (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT): 800-729-3343 9am-5pm PST.
Precision Edge will ask you some questions about your shear to make some notes on what to expect when they receive them and will discuss payment for shear service.
Sharpening Service Fees are as follows (the lifetime warranty does not include sharpening/service fees):
BEFORE 1 YEAR: $20.00 (receipt required) + shipping fees
AFTER 1 YEAR: $40.00 + shipping fees
If you choose to send the shear(s) on your own/without the label after speaking to Precision Edge, be sure to obtain insurance and tracking in case of loss or damage during shipping and keep the tracking in a safe place. Note: If you send more than 1 shear, shipping may be slightly higher, please discuss during your call.

Many new stylists and even some experienced stylists are under the common misconception that the length of their shears should be determined by the size of their hand. In reality, this is not the case as there are many with larger hands who simply prefer short shears, as well as those with small hands who cut all day with a 7” shear. Instead, stylists must consider the variety of different styling techniques they will employ in order to carry out their work. Haircutting shears are measured in inches with the entire length of the shears calculated from the ‘point end’ all the way to the back of the finger ring.
Different sized shears are used to perform different styling techniques. For example, a short shear is much better suited for detailed precision cutting, while a longer scissor is preferred for powerful cutting. The standard size most hairdressers use is between 5” and 6”. This falls neatly into the middle ground between some of the shortest scissors on the market at 4.5” (Sam Villa Shears start at 5.5”) and the some of the longest at 7” like our Dry Cutting Shear (which you can use on wet hair just as well) Ideally, if it’s manageable for you, it is best to have a shorter shear like a 5.5”, for precision cutting between your fingers and a longer shear for the techniques listed below.
One-length Cutting (Such as bobs): When cutting a “bob-line” the hair is combed down against the neckline. Here a longer blade will allow the stylist to make fewer cuts to connect the line all the way across. This allows for a cleaner line and will significantly reduce the time this effect will take you to create. Recommendation: 7″ Dry Cutting Shear and Signature Series Reversible Blender (for a softer line)
Cutting on the Skin (hairline): As with ‘bob line’ cutting, when cutting on the skin longer shears will allow a stylist to cut longer sections and get cleaner looks more easily. It is also worth mentioning that a forward set thumb handle also helps when cutting on the skin as it lifts the hand away from the body due to its innovative design. Recommendation: 6″ Signature Series Swivel Shear
Scissor Over Comb: Here the comb will pick up a wider section of hair than your fingers. By using a longer blade you will be able to cut the hair cleanly without it falling out of the comb. This benefits the stylist as it requires less effort and most importantly less time. Another benefit of a longer blade on shear over comb is that the weight of the blade allows the shear to do the work as well. Recommendation: 7″ Dry Cutting Shear and Signature Series Reversible
Blender Slide Cutting: If you attempt a slide cut with a shorter blade, your hand will move through the section you have just cut due to it being in close proximity to the blades. Because of this it is necessary to comb it again to see what you have accomplished. This hassle and time-consuming practice can easily be eliminated with longer blades as it will allow you to slide your blades into the hair without having to move the hair with your hand. Recommendation: Artist Series Slide Cutting Shear or 6″ Essential Series Shear
Cutting Around the Face: With short scissor blades your hand will no doubt be in your clients face and, in some cases can leave the finger rest of some shears dangerously close to the individual’s eye. A longer blade here will allow you to cut your clients hair with your hand a comfortable distance back from their face. The benefits of this are that you can see what you are doing better, and the client has a more comfortable experience. Plus, you are able to leave the hand and wrist in a neutral position while cutting in many different angles. Recommendation: 6.25″ Signature Series Shear

Sam Villa® warrants this shear to be free from defects in material or workmanship for the LIFE OF THE SHEAR, excluding damage and normal wear.
Sam Villa® will replace any parts including washers, pivot screws, knobs and finger rings for the LIFE OF THE SHEAR, should they fail under normal use. Parts will automatically be replaced at the time of service, if needed. It is not necessary to send shears for replacement parts only.
The lifetime warranty does not include shear servicing fees. We are partnered with Precision Edge for all of our Sam Villa® shear servicing. To review our servicing fees, please visit the Shear Sharpening article for more information.
Please note that all Sam Villa® shears lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects is void if sharpened by anyone other than Precision Edge.

You’ve probably heard about our shears but might be wondering, “What are the differences?” The type of metal used, the length of the blades, our tension adjustment systems and cost are just a few of the differences.
Now, let’s get you up to speed so when it comes time to buy new shears you are holding the perfect pair that fits your wants and desires!
The Essential Series. “True to my mission of making ergonomically correct tools for stylists that deliver maximum results with minimum effort, I wanted to offer a line of precision shears that any stylist could afford, regardless of whether they’re just getting out of beauty school or well established. And, I included the true lefty versions because stylists are frustrated with the lack of lefty options and I knew there was a need in the market,” explains Sam.
Signature Series Shears are the original, upper tier line with advanced ergonomic comfort and superior performance. Shears created by a stylist, for stylists. These high-performance precision shears are made with molybdenum alloy, Rockwell Hardness/60-61. They have convex blades and a polymer lining at the pivot point for an even smooth gliding action. They also have a Leaf Spring Tension System, so the blades evenly distribute cutting action across the length and width of the blade. These shears are sure to be a stylist’s new best friend. Ideal for any stylist interested in a superior shear with all the “bells and whistles”…think Lexus.
Essential Series Shears are the humble, yet powerful brother of the Signature Series Shears, made with 440C Stainless Steel, Rockwell Hardness/58-59, they have convex blades and a Click Set Stream Line Tension System with a flat screw, which is ideal for slide cutting. Ideal for any stylist looking for that every day “workhorse” shear…think Toyota.
It’s not about another pair of shears, it’s about your hands,” Sam says. “If a stylist drops their arm at their side in a neutral position, shakes it, brings it up naturally and holds a pair of my shears, they can feel the ergonomic design. Their elbow will be level, their hands and fingers will be in a neutral position with the shear blades horizontal, and minimal thumb movement is needed to open and close the shear. If the same stylist were also holding opposing grip shears, they would be set a different angle with the blades pointing more upward, and more input would be needed from the elbow, shoulder and thumb to level out and open and close those shears which causes more strain on those body parts.”

The Essential Series Reversible Blender is a much more forgiving shear having only 30 teeth. The younger brother of the Sam Villa® blenders is an excellent entry level blender but is also perfect when you simply do not want to get too aggressive with weight extraction.
The Signature Series Reversible Blending Shear has 42 radial (curved) teeth for removing bulk from a wider section of hair without leaving hard lines. At the top of each tooth, you will find V-shaped grooves that enable the shear to capture larger amounts of hair to be cut, making for a quite aggressive blender. You can also blast through a relatively large section of hair with this shear. This shear is a favorite for working with men’s haircuts, especially scissor over comb work.
The InvisiBlend is anything other than a traditional blender. Its over-polished blunt blade forces the hair over the 23 sharp convex teeth in such a way that no two hairs are cut the same length. This makes for an extremely light removal of weight with no visible lines. The InvisiBlend removes the least amount of hair, compared to our other blending shears. Now you can actually remove bulk and hold onto most of your length in a section! And it is great for point cutting as well.
Is your shear feeling heavy or tight? Product buildup and other factors can cause this to happen. By simply oiling your shears on a regular basis you will notice how your shear responds!
• Oil your shear with a drop or two of clipper or shear oil, at least once per week.
• Put the oil in the pivot area of the shear and then wipe it down the blades to clean them off.
When a shear bends the hair over or catches hair, it is usually because the tension system is too loose, allowing the blades to spread apart and causing the hair to fold instead of being cut. If this is the case, you can adjust the tension and the problem will be solved. It is not uncommon for a brand-new shear to need an adjustment after the components seat themselves during the first few haircuts.

To clean and maintain your Sam Villa Dry Sectioning Clips, please follow the steps below:
1) Remove any hair from the clip.
2) Dip a small brush or rag in a state board "recognized" EPA approved disinfectant (such as Barbicide®).
3) Wipe down the clip with the small brush or rag.
4) Rinse the clip with cool water.
5) Pat dry and then let air dry for at least 10 minutes.
BAMBOO BRUSH CLEANING TIPS:
1) Use a brush cleaner designed with hard, wide-spaced, teeth on one end and longer bristles or wire on the other end. Try the Sam Villa Brush Cleaner available on www.samvilla.com.
2) Utilize the wide toothed end of the cleaning brush to rake through each row of bristles to loosen tangled knots of hair at the base of the brush.
3) Work gently to avoid damaging bristles.
4) Dampen the brush with water. Utilizing the longer bristled end of the cleaning brush along with a few drops clarifying shampoo or liquid hand soap, lightly move the cleaning brush back and forth over the brush barrel and bristles to clear away residue build up.
5) Do not soak brushes in harsh liquid sanitizers.
6) Rinse the brush with warm water.
7) Rinse again to ensure all soap is removed.
8) Gently shake water droplets from the bristles.
9) Lay the brush with the bristles facing down on a towel to air dry overnight or until completely dry. If you place the brush bristle-side up, water will seep into the ferrule (the silver colored area that connects the bristles to the handle) and potentially damage the brush.
THERMAL BRUSH CLEANING TIPS:
1) Remove hair and lint trapped around the base of the brush using the tip of your sectioning comb.
2) Use a brush cleaner designed with hard, wide-spaced, teeth on one end and longer bristles or wire on the other end. Try the Sam Villa Brush Cleaner available on www.samvilla.com.
3) Utilize the wide toothed end of the cleaning brush to rake through each row of bristles to loosen tangled knots of hair at the base of the brush.
4) Work gently to avoid damaging bristles.
5) Dampen the brush with water. Utilizing the longer bristled end of the cleaning brush along with a few drops clarifying shampoo or liquid hand soap, lightly move the cleaning brush back and forth over the brush barrel and bristles to clear away residue build up.
To clean and maintain your blow dryer, the filter easily unlocks for effortless cleaning! Cleaning your filter is an important factor in keeping your dryer in optimum working condition as build up of debris and hair can cause any dryer to overheat, smoke, or shut down.
1) Unplug your dryer.
2) Twist the filter away from the back of the dryer in a counter-clockwise motion to remove it.
3) Use a small brush with plastic or nylon bristles to clear away lint, hair and debris from the removed filter and from the grid attached to the dryer that protects the fan.
4) If necessary, place a vacuum with a hose against the grid attached to the dryer that protects the fan to draw out hair and debris.
5) If there is any sticky build up on the removed filter, run it under warm water while using the small brush to remove the build up taking caution not to dent or damage the filter screen.
6) Shake out excess water and allow the filter to air dry completely before re-installing.
7) Once the filter is completely dry, twist it back onto the dryer by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place.
External Cleaning:
1) Unplug your dryer.
2) Use a damp (not wet) cloth to clean the outside surface.
3) Dry thoroughly before using.
Do not:
• Use harsh or abrasive cleaning agents
• Immerse in water or other liquids
• Use when wet or while hands are wet

The Sam Villa® Reversible Cape must be washed and dried properly to retain the bleach resistant, water resistant/waterproof properties and imprint graphics. If washed and cared for properly, the Reversible Cape will last longer and perform as intended.
For best results, do not machine dry on heat setting. The high heat of a dryer can compromise or melt the water resistant/waterproof treated material as well as destroy the printed logo. The Reversible Cape is designed to wash quickly on gentle wash, and dry very quickly by just hanging to dry, or if you prefer you can dry on a low/cool dry machine setting. There is no need to wash on long cycle. Washing on gentle will extend the life of the garment.
For Best Results:
• Wash in Cool or Warm Water/Gentle Cycle or Hand Wash Cycle
• Hang to Drip Dry or Cool Dry in Dryer
• DO NOT Machine Dry on HEAT Setting (this can compromise/melt the water resistant/waterproof treated material)
• DO NOT Dry Clean
• DO NOT Iron
• DO NOT Use Bleach
• DO NOT Use Fabric Softener

For ultimate performance, the Sam Villa® Light Ionic Blow Dryer should only be used in the United States, Canada and Mexico as it is not equipped with dual voltage. You run the risk of damage to the dryer and international outlets if used outside of these countries (due to alternative wiring and voltage) even if used with a converter or adapter.
The power cord is 9 feet, which allows for more mobility and durability while helping to prevent cord tangling!
The Sam Villa® Light Ionic Blow Dryer weighs 14.7 ounces (450 grams).
At under one pound, it is one of the lightest dryers you can buy!
Yes, the Sam Villa® Blow Dryer is ionic...it features a built-in ion generator!
An ionic dryer has negatively charged ions which create more shine with less frizz in the hair, leaving the hair shinier and healthy looking. The negative ions also help to dry the hair at a much faster rate so there is less damage to the cuticle.
Sam Villa® Blow Dryers – Differences and Specifications
The Artist Series Blow Dryer has an AC motor which makes it slightly heavier (about 3 oz more than the Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer), but provides more airflow and higher heat. It is actively ionic which means you can control the negative ions with an on/off switch (on for shine and a smooth cuticle and off for volume).
The Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer has a turbo-compressor DC motor which makes it really lightweight (under one pound) and gives it a lot of rotating airflow (as opposed to straight-line airflow) to dry the hair faster. It is passively ionic which means it is ionic all of the time.
The Vision Blow Dryer has a 1800w Brushless DC motor which will last 5x longer than traditional motors as they do not generate friction. It also includes a Push Lock Cold Shot button to lock-in shine without the extra effort.
The Essential Series Blow Dryer has a professional 1750w AC motor for a quick, powerful dry. It includes front switches which are suitable for any grip. This is a great option for at-home styling and traveling.
To break it down, if you are looking for an extremely powerful dryer that gets really hot and you want to be able to control the ions, go with the Artist Series Blow Dryer. If you are looking for a lightweight quiet dryer that still has a ton of power and heat, go with the Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer. If you are looking for a powerful, yet ideal blow dryer for traveling / at-home use (with professional results), go with the Essential Series Blow Dryer. If you are searching for a blow dryer with a powerful brushless motor which uses 75% less energy, go with the Vision Blow Dryer.
Also, here’s a little breakdown of the specifications for each blow dryer:
Artist Series Professional Blow Dryer
Watts: 1750w
Noise Decibel: 72
Weight: 1.09 lbs.
Professional Light Ionic Blow Dryer
Watts: 1750w
Noise Decibel: 70
Weight: 0.94 lbs.
Vision Blow Dryer
Watts: 1800w
Noise Decibel: 71
Weight: 1 lb.
Essential Series Blow Dryer
Watts: 1750w
Noise Decibel: 70
Weight: 1.10 lbs.

If you are serious about your finishing, you should understand the advantages of using a nozzle:
Wide Nozzles
- Essential for drying long, thick hair
- The wider length expands the airflow and dries more hair faster
Narrow Nozzles
- Essential for drying fringes and frizzy, wavy and curly hair
- Concentrated airflow produces faster airflow resulting in a more polished finish
Directing the airflow from the dryer with an attached nozzle from scalp to ends on a lower speed with a higher temperature will actually dry the hair faster without blowing the hair all over-exposing the cuticle. End result is shiny hair with less frizz.
Don't suffocate the dryer by making direct contact with the nozzle and the brush. Keep the nozzle at least ½-1 inch away from the brush so you don't a) melt the bristles on your brush and b) damage the motor on your hair dryer causing it to overheat.
For more tips on why and how you should use a concentrator nozzle when blow drying hair, check out this video clip:
The Sam Villa Pro Light Ionic Blow Dryer features the following:
3 Heat Settings:
• Low = Standard Room Temperature
• Medium = 120 Degrees Fahrenheit
• High = 251 Degrees Fahrenheit
2 Speed Settings:
• Low
• High
We also have designed included an instant cool shot button. These buttons, along with the on/off switch, are ergonomically positioned and conveniently located inside the handgrip for easy control.
The Sam Villa Pro Light Ionic Blow Dryer comes with the following:
2 rotating nozzles:
• 1 Wide (2.5") to expand airflow while drying long, thick hair.
• 1 Narrow (3") for use when more air concentration is needed for polished finishes.
Note: We also have a Deep-Bowl Diffuser available for purchase on our website (designed to reduce frizz and respect natural curl pattern on wavy and curly hair). Replacement nozzles, diffusers, and filters can also be purchased on our website.
Two concentrator nozzles are included with most professional blow dryers and they are included for a reason – they allow us to work smarter, not harder!
Our patented Evolution-Turbo Compressor Technology is 1750 watts. This enables more airflow with less power drain!
Professional Direct Current (DC) Motor includes a patented, Evolution-Turbo Compressor that delivers intense power quietly while remaining lightweight.
The Sam Villa® Pro Light Ionic Blow Dryer is made in Italy. Italy is widely known to produce the best blow dryers in the world.
Sam designed the dryer with Italian engineers to produce a small, lightweight dryer that is easy to work with all day long.

Watch the video of Sam Villa discussing shear length:

WE’VE CREATED A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR YOU TO FOLLOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PURCHASE!
